Originally established in the mid-fifteen hundreds, San Diego is the oldest port on the west coast. Abandoned for a time, the modern city of San Diego eventually was developed five miles away from the first site. The city has grown rapidly since the mid nineteenth century, and is now the second largest city in California.
Long known as a naval base, San Diego also hosts major attractions such Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, and a number of museums. Balboa Park, on the edge of the business district, is home to many of these institutions.
There is also Old Town, near the original harbor, where there are small shops and restaurants. But the real glory of San Diego is modern; a new city, on the beach, with perpetual spring-like weather and an easy going attitude. It's a city well worth visiting.
