   SAN FRANCISCO ESSENTIALS

San Francisco is divided into sections with their own distinctive styles. To get directly to the heart of San Francisco, head downtown to Market Street and you will reach many of the well-known tourist attractions. The Muni buses run every which way in and out of Market Street. (Unless you love hunting for parking spaces and parallel parking on steep hills, take public transport). Union Square is several blocks away. And Chinatown is within reasonable walking distance. Once you're engrossed in all the sights and sounds of Chinatown, you will find yourself in North Beach in no time. There, find Coit Tower and get a panorama of the city and bay. North Beach flows into Fisherman's Wharf, with its seafood restaurants, entertainers, and shops. Take a ferry to Alcatraz from the piers, visit the Maritime Museum, or buy some chocolate at Ghirardelli Square. And if you get tired of walking, catch one of the many buses that pass along the way. If you have an extra day or two, head toward the other side of town. Spend a day at Golden Gate Park, with its museums and concerts. Or go to the Haight Ashbury and take a look at the old haunts of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and the like. Check out the murals in the Mission District. Go towards Lake Merced, in the southwest corner of the city, and take your kids to the San Francisco Zoo. Or take the 49-mile scenic drive. Just follow the blue-and-white seagull signs that will take you on a mini-excursion around the best-known sights of the city.
