      Atlanta Nightlife

There are many places to celebrate and unwind in Atlanta, one of the South's most metropolitan cities. There is something for every one, whether it be the theatre, music, dancing, drinking or a little of all of them. Buckhead is probably your best bet for a concentration of night life, and midtown has many good theatres. The good news? There is something going on every night of the week somewhere in town.

      THEATRE

Seven Stages Performing Arts Center-This troupe has been performing theatre for close to two decades. Modern, reworked classical theatre and children's productions can all be found here. 1105 Euclid Ave. 404-523-7647

Alliance Theatre Company- This theatre, one of the largest in the south, does about ten shows a season (September through May). They offer children's theatre during the season as well as a lunch theatre, which does one acts and short vaudeville vignettes. 1280 Peachtree St. NE 404-733-5000

      OPERA

Atlanta Opera-Advance tickets required. The season runs from May to September. 660 Peachtree St. NE (In the Fox Theatre) 404-355-3311

      NIGHTLIFE-DANCING

Otto's-This clubs patronage is older adults (30's & up) and is a nice place to go and cut the rug or just listen to live music. No ball caps, t-shirts, or sneakers. 265 Paces Ferry Rd. NE 404-233-1133

Johnny's Hideaway- The rat pack would have been in heaven here. Mid-century crooning and big band get your feet to tapping in this ten year old Atlanta institution. You might even catch a star there. 3771 Roswell Rd. 404-233-8026

Masquerade- This club borrows heavily from a Miami club with two sections in which act as different bars (Heaven and Hell), with Masquerade's addition of Purgatory. It's a H*** of a club, though. There is plenty of dance music plus national acts, such as Iggy Pop, play upstairs in Heaven and in a 4,000 seat venue on the premises. 695 north Ave. NE 404-577-8178

      NIGHTLIFE-MUSIC & COCKTAILS

Tounge and Groove-Atlanta magazine thinks that this 5,000 Sq. Ft. establishment is the best night club in the city. . A great place to get all dressed to the nines and sip martinis, usually to the accompaniment of live music. 3055 Peachtree Rd. 404-261-2325

Yin Yang Café-In a word, Jazzy. Real live jazz in swinging nightclub. Sit back and let the jazz wash over you, there is jazz poetry, acid jazz and naked jazz with guest musicians. 64 Third St. NE 404-607-0682

Fado'-This little slice of Ireland is a good place to have a cocktail or a pint. Fado', Gaeilge for "long ago", is a corporate owned pub which has a twin in D.C.'s Chinatown. It is five pubs in one. Every little section is different from the next and if you're hungry, the food will knock your socks off! 3035 Peachtree Rd. NE 404-841-0066

Fat Tuesday-Why bother going to New Orleans when you could just have a Mardi Gras party every night right here. A lot of good aperitifs and frozen cocktails (20 frozen daiquiris on tap). Top 40 music is on the bill here. 50 Upper Alabama St. SW (In Underground Atlanta) 404-523-7404

John Harvard's Brewhouse-That's right, they brew it right here so you can have the freshest beer possible. If you are a beer connoisseur then you can't go wrong with the selection of ales, lagers, porters and stouts that they usually have on one of their eight taps. A really good pub with good drinks and good atmosphere. 3041 Peachtree Rd. NE 404-816-2739

Dante's Down the Hatch- This place is something else and it's proprietor, Dante Stephensen, is a real piece of work. The outside is a ship, and you enter through the ships hatch and descend into the galley. This ship is in the factual spot of a civil war hospital which was portrayed in Gone With The Wind. It's well was used by Atlanta's first fire department in 1810. Kick back and watch real crocodiles frolic as you sip some rum punch and listen to live music.
