   SAVANNAH TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

History, architecture and atmosphere are Savannah's main attractions. The following are some tips and things we feel are some of the must see or do while visiting.

The most popular way to see Savannah is aboard one of the many trolley tours that board at the visitors center (303 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd). The average price is $15, some offer unlimited on/off boarding during the course of the route. These give a good overview of the area and provide interesting local stories.

Looking at the map may not make it seem so, but walking is a good way to see Savannah. Whizzing by the historic points on a trolley tour makes for a good overview, but it's difficult to take in the atmosphere of the neighborhoods. The main part of the district is only about 12 blocks square and the many squares offer plenty of opportunities for shade and water breaks. The visitors center has walking maps that you should have in hand before setting out. If your visit is in the summer, start early. The sun can be harsh, even before noon.

There are also several organized walking tours available ranging from architectural tours to ghost tours. A guide can uncover much that would ordinarily be missed by passersby.

Ace Basin Tours- Tours are about three hours long, traveling through the marshes and sea islands of the ACE Basin. Tours leave from the ACE Basin Tours dock on Coosaw Island. Captain Stan, tour guide and captain, is a former coast guard captain and shrimper with life-long experience of the ACE Basin. He has extensive knowledge of the history and wildlife of the area.

Points of Interest: expanded information can be found in the Things To See or Things To Do section.

River Street is a shopping and restaurant destination, located on the waterfront.

City Market- not produce, but antiques, specialty items, and food.

The Savannah History Museum- good history background.

One of the few houses on tour, the Owens-Thomas House

Parking is available in the historic districts. The streets are wide with parallel parking in most places. Parking meters are on the streets close to the squares and public buildings. The visitors center also has parking lots which fill early. A parking deck is available at the City Market. Driving is relatively easy compared to most tourist cities. The streets are in blocks and well marked. Traffic squares eliminate the need for stop lights and keeps traffic moving. Yield to the traffic already in the square.

Had too much touring? Head to the beach. Tybee Island is 20 minutes away with white beaches. The atmosphere is small and family oriented with only a handfull of hotels and numerous year round family homes.
