Even though the suburbs are home to most of the population and commercial activity, downtown is the heart of Wilmington. Here you will find many things to keep you occupied; including: the state's largest urban historic district, fine shopping and dining, and several museums and galleries. A range of accommodations are available, from modern hotel to lovely bed and breakfast. The best thing may be that most everything is within walking distance of everything else.
Don't miss the battleship USS North Carolina, on the other side of the river. It's Wilmington's most visible attraction and the state's most venerable veteran.
