Highlights
What you choose to do in Wilmington depends on your interests and how much time you have. Everything we list in the guide is a worthwhile activity, but if you hit the city on the run, here are what we believe to be the must-see items in each category.
History
Wilmington is filled with history, too much to reduce to a single listing. One of the best things to do is absolutely free. Walk or drive through the historic district. The city is teeming with historic houses, most of which are still lived in. The quiet, tree lined streets are perfect for a relaxing stroll.
- The USS North Carolina is in many ways the area's premier attraction. If you've never seen a battleship, this is the place to do it.
- For a general history, the Cape Fear Museum can't be beat.
- If your tastes are 18th Century and Colonial, see the Burgwin-Wright House.
- For Ante-Bellum Victorian splendor, the Latimer House is your destination.
Activities
Unlike many areas, Wilmington has many free or inexpensive ways to amuse yourself. Much of it's centered on the water, so if you find yourself out of ideas and money, head for the coast. Something will surely turn up.

Daytrips
Wilmington is only 90 minutes away from one of the most popular resorts in the country, Myrtle Beach. There you will find loads of Things to Do, including Variety Shows, Amusement Parks, Shopping, and more golf and miniature golf than you can imagine.
Transportation
- The New Hanover International Airport is a new, big city airport in miniature.
- North Carolina has more inland water than any other state. To bridge those waters it maintains a number of ferry routes. The local installment is the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry. Here is the schedule and information on costs and reservations. (not required)
