Cape Fear Fishing

Season
Fishing season on the coast doesn't begin until the water temperature reaches between 62-68 degrees. This is usually in late April, but definitely by May. The best fishing times are in the Spring and Fall when the fish are running. This is usually May-early June and Sept.-Nov.. Blues, mullet, flounder, Spanish and King Mackerel, and Atlantic Bonita are some of the fish most often caught in the area. If you are fishing from the pier, early morning and late afternoon are the best times. When the water warms up from the sun around midday, the fish move on to deeper water, so spending all day on the pier is a good way to waste a lot of time.

Equipment
If you are bringing a rod, a light spinning outfit with 8-15 pound test line should be able to handle anything in this area. Of course, if you're fishing for King, most people use 3-6 alt reels.

Bait
Blood worms, mullet, and shrimp are a good choice. Most fisherman have good luck using plastic lures, especially for blues. For Spanish, use a jerk-rigger from the pier or surf. If you're not having any luck, change your bait and experiment.

Other Advice
If you need some help, ask someone. You're sure to find helpful advice at any of the local piers or bait shops.
