Roan Mountain Natural Rhododendron Garden- the world's largest natural rhododendron garden located on the South's snowiest peak, at 6,315 feet. Bakersville, NC. State Park 828-682-3303.
The Weaving Room- Watch weavers on hand looms weave coverlets and textiles Monday-Friday. Crossnore, NC. 828-733-4660.
Frescoes- Holy Trinity and St. Mary's Episcopal Church, includes frescoes of The Last Supper, and Mary Great with Child. Free. Open 24 hrs a day, year round. 910-982-3076.
Linn Cove Viaduct- A 1,243 foot section of the Blue Ridge Parkway which is the most complicated concrete bridge ever built. The 153 individual sections weighing 50 tons each sweep in a S-shaped curve skirting around the rocky perimeter of Grandfather Mountain. A visitor center is located at the south end of the viaduct.
Appalachian Heritage Museum- Artifacts, antiques and displays portraying the culture of the Blue Ridge Mountain people from Native American times through the 1900's. Located between Boone & Blowing Rock, US Hwy 321/221. 828-264-2792.
The Blowing Rock- A huge cliff overhanging the Johns River Gorge, 3000 feet below. Scenic observation tower open April - October, March and November weather permitting. US Hwy 321 Blowing Rock, NC 828-295-7111.
Scenic Fall Leaves- A popular time to visit the mountains is October for the cool weather and the turning of the leaves. The best times to see the leaves at their peak colors says the US Forest Service is between October 7th and 14th at the 4,300 - 5,300 ft. level, at the 3,300 to 4,300 ft. level between the 14th and 21st.
Horn In The West- Outdoor Drama set in 1771, Daniel Boone leads a group of settlers for independence from the crown. Boone, NC. 828-264-2120
Daniel Boone Native Gardens- Native plants maintained by the Garden Club of North Carolina. Next to Horn In the West Outdoor drama. Open May-Sept. And weekends in Oct.
Hickory Ridge Homestead- Homesite representative of late eighteenth century; 5 buildings onsite and giftshop Hwy 105, Boone, NC 828-264-2120.
Appalachian Cultural Museum- Items representing the area's history including quilts, furniture, arrow heads and Junior Johnson's race car. Boone, 828-262-3117.
Boone Fork Trail Falls 25 ft. Falls located on Boone Fork Trail. Milepost 295 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, trail entrance at Julian Price Park at the picnic area.
The Cascades 3 cascading falls, 30 to 40 ft. Milepost 272 on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Jeffress Park, trail starts in the picnic area.
Crabtree Falls 60 Ft. Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Visitor Center at Milepost 340. Half hour nature trail walk to the falls.
Elk River Falls 85 Ft. Falls Accessible by Elk River Road which is 2 miles north of Elk Park, parking area in the Pisgah National Forest. Also accessible between Elk Park and Banner Elk at SR 1308 near Heaton on NC 194.
Glen Burney Falls 75 Ft. Falls in John's River Gorge below Blowing Rock off Globe Road.
Laurel Creek Falls 85 Ft. Falls on US 321 just past Cover Creek and Sugar Grove at Laurel Creek Road.
Linville Falls 90 Ft. Falls plunges into Linville Gorge. 1/2 mile trail from the Blue Ridge Parkway parking area leads to the falls at Milepost 316. Ranger station 828-765-7818.
Wilson Creek Falls On the Tanawha Trail 2.7 miles from the Linn Cove Viaduct. Milepost 305.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
