Corolla is the northern limit of habitation on the Outer Banks. From Currituck Lighthouse, in the heart of Corolla, you can see the beaches of Virginia. Just over a decade ago this section of the island was closed except to a few property owners and those with four wheel drives. Quite a few visitors still drive four wheel drives, but these tend to be emerald green, have leather seats, and rarely transverse anything but a well paved road, often in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Virginia.
There's a reason the gentry flock to the Northern Outer Banks. Planned development has led to low density housing communities well integrated with the landscape and amenities such as shopping and athletic facilities. A pleasant air of relaxed affluence pervades this whole section of the Outer Banks.
