Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Canadian Hole

The destination for windsurfers, something of a windsurfing mecca with nearly ideal conditions. Located 1-1/2 mile south of Avon, there is always activity if there is wind. A paved parking lot keeps you out of the sand.

Buxton Woods Nature Trail

This trail is located just south of the lighthouse on the right side of the road. The trail is 3/4 of a mile long, and navigates in and around the maritime forest of Buxton Woods.

Hatteras Island Flying Service

Several tours are offered each tour is 30 to 45 minutes in length and range from $20-37.50 depending on tour and number of persons. Sight seeing tour may include Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Diamond Shoals, Avon, Waves & Salvo, shipwrecks, Ocracoke village and Inlet, Portsmouth village and Pamlico Sound. 10 AM-Sunset, Monday-Saturday, Across from Billy Mitchell Airstrip, Frisco. 252-995-6671

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife includes the Greater Snow Goose, wildfowl during the winter, wading and shore birds during the autumn. Parking and observation platforms, handicapped trails accessible, information headquarters 7 miles south of Oregon Inlet. Refuge located adjacent NC 12 between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe. Free, daylight hours, 252-473-1131.
