The destination for windsurfers, something of a windsurfing mecca with nearly ideal conditions. Located 1-1/2 mile south of Avon, there is always activity if there is wind. A paved parking lot keeps you out of the sand.
This trail is located just south of the lighthouse on the right side of the road. The trail is 3/4 of a mile long, and navigates in and around the maritime forest of Buxton Woods.

Several tours are offered each tour is 30 to 45 minutes in length and range from $20-37.50 depending on tour and number of persons. Sight seeing tour may include Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Diamond Shoals, Avon, Waves & Salvo, shipwrecks, Ocracoke village and Inlet, Portsmouth village and Pamlico Sound. 10 AM-Sunset, Monday-Saturday, Across from Billy Mitchell Airstrip, Frisco. 252-995-6671
Wildlife includes the Greater Snow Goose, wildfowl during the winter, wading and shore birds during the autumn. Parking and observation platforms, handicapped trails accessible, information headquarters 7 miles south of Oregon Inlet. Refuge located adjacent NC 12 between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe.
