The Joseph Manigault House (c. 1803) is a premier example of the graceful Adam style architecture. Designed by gentleman-architect Gabriel for his brother Joseph, the house is one of the most distinguished in the city, capturing the lifestyle of a wealthy, rice-planting family. A fascinating feature of this house is the curving central staircase that accentuates the entrance hall. The garden, thought to be designed by Joseph's wife Charlotte, is enhanced by a charming Gate Temple.
The interior reflects an outstanding collection of American, English and French furnishings of the period.
The Joseph Manigault House has been featured on America's Castles and is a National Historic Landmark. It is located across the street from the Museum.
Both houses have written interpretations in German, French, Japanese, and Spanish.
