   SEATTLE TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

In order to get a better idea of just how beautiful and vast Seattle is, take the 90 second trip on the Monorail from downtown to the 74(c)acre Seattle Center and head straight for the Space Needle. (See, "The Train to Nowhere," and "Seattle's Livingroom," in Things To Do.) Take the elevator to the newly remodeled indoor/outdoor observation decks, and see, from 520 feet up, why "The Emerald City" was dubbed in 1977, as, the most livable city in America.

In 1982, Seattle was ranked as the number one recreational city in America. And today, Seattlites are literally bursting with a distinct passion for art and adventure.

If you only have one or two days in which to see the sights, shop, sip latte's, and tantalize your taste buds with Seattle's fabulous Pan Asian and Northwest cuisine, here are a few choice recommendations. Keep in mind that Seattle is "The Gateway to the Pacific Rim," and a leading city in international trade. Just about everything you could think of, and many things you never thought existed, can be found here.

Seattle is on top of its history, literally. Take the hour and a half Underground Tour 610 First Avenue(206/682-4646), and see why when Seattle began it had one foot in the grave.

The Pike Place Market downtown is the oldest continually operating farmer's market in the country. You can find everything from Indian blankets to flying salmon.

The Seattle Aquarium,Pier 59, Waterfront Park(206-386-4320). 380 species of marine mammals, fish, birds and invertebrates. Stroll through the underwater dome. See the world's only aquarium based salmon ladder and fish hatchery, where you can witness the life cycle of Pacific Salmon.

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, 11610 Trek Drive East Eatonville, WA 98328 (800-433-TREK) (360-832-6117). Explore nature trails, or ride the naturalist guided tram through 635 acre's of natural habitat, where northwest animals roam in the meadows, forests, wetlands and rocky ridges.

Washington State Ferries, 801 Alaskan Way, Pier 53 Seattle, WA 98104 (206/464-6400). This is the state's number one tourist attraction. See leaping orca's, snow capped mountains, cityscapes, and all the sparkling water.
