Joke of the Week
EXTREME VACATION OF THE WEEK
A few weeks ago we mentioned the joys of summer
skiing in New Zealand. (They don’t think it’s summer, but everything there is
upside down.) Not everyone though likes skiing down hills. For those who
prefer to ski cross country, we have the summer adventure for you. Skiing to
the North Pole. Find out how Santa spends the off months as you camp at an
advance ice base, get heloed to 89 degrees north, then make a mad 70 mile
dash to the Pole.

DIFFERENT, BUT NOT SO EXTREME
VACATION OF THE WEEK
Two hundred years ago next month Meriwether Lewis and William Clark,
along with their Corps of Discovery, left St. Louis for an 8,000 mile trek to
the Pacific and back. It wasn’t a vacation, but it was extreme. They
collected, negotiated and explored their way across the northwest and gave
the young country an idea of the vast territory it had just purchased. You
can take the same route in much more comfort. There are any number of tours,
this site will get you started by laying out a journey you can take on your
own.

Palio of Siena
Siena, Italy
July 1, 2004
For the Siennese, the Palio horse-race

lunacy, bribery, poisoning and death-threats have all played their parts in
the event since its inauguration in 1310.

Brussels,
Belgium
July 1-3, 2004
Brussels' Grand Place is packed with spectators, including the Royal
Family and their guests, for Ommegang, or "walk about", the major

from a 14th-century religious ritual, the huge parade is now devoid of
religious connotations and focuses on local folklore and heritage.
