      St. Petersburg: Barnett Bank Building
      Barnett Bank Building

      The Essential Guide to:

      St. Petersburg,
      Florida

      Weather | Map

As with the rest of South Florida, St. Petersburg didn't really get its start until after the Civil War when developers starting putting in railroads and hotels to attract the vacation and retirement crowd. They were so successful that St. Petersburg has long retained the aura of a place people go after they're through in other places.

That has been changing for a number of years as vacationers have come to the nearby beaches and, attracted by the climate and natural beauty of the area, decided to stay.

The city has an ongoing development and redevelopment program that certainly shows in the abundance of manicured open places. More than most any other city, St. Petersburg looks like a garden.
