NC Mountains Quick Tour
Photo Gallery- a collection of North Carolina Mountain photographs.
Weather: Boone, Asheville
The North Carolina Mountains are home to many attractions, too many to take in on just one trip. For those who are in the area for just a short time the following are what we consider to be the must see or do.
-
Skiing- The surrounding Mountains have several ski resorts that host multiple slopes, most with snow making capabilities.
- Hiking- is a big draw to the area with trails criss crossing the mountains. Many opportunities for hiking, camping, canoeing, rafting and fishing in the area. A list of trails can be found in the Things To Do and the location of waterfalls in the Things To See.
- Grandfather Mountain- Many opportunities for camping, hiking, picnic areas, and the mile high swinging bridge.
- Tweetsie Railroad- Anyone who lived in NC in the 70's-80's would remember the "All Aboard it's the Tweetsie Railroad" TV commercials. A western style theme park for those with kids, a 3 mile train ride that is held up at gun point and Indian fights along the way. Amusement rides and petting zoo as well.
- Linville Caverns- North Carolinas only underground caverns. Guided tours of the caverns under Linville Mountain. Caverns are chilly so take a sweater.
- There are many parks in the area with Pisgah National Forest being a favorite among many. Linville Gorge Wilderness, and Roan Mountain State Park are also located in the park. A list of other parks are located in the Things To Do.
- Linn Cove Viaduct- One of the most popular images associated with the Blue Ridge Mountains. An S shaped bridge that skirts around Grandfather Mountain. The Parkway is a favorite scenic drive with many overlooks and stopping points along the way.
- Fall Colors- The turning of the leaves in the fall is a beautiful time to be in the Mountains. Peak colors are usually between October 7th and the 14th. for the upper elevations. This is a very popular time, so plan ahead.
