The Essential Guide(sm) to

Roanoke Island
North Carolina

Including

Manteo and Wanchese

Roanoke Island was the site of the first English attempt at colonization in America. By any account it was a failure. All of the colonists disappeared, leaving only the word "Croatoan" carved on a post. To this day the fate of those colonists remains one of the greatest mysteries of American history.

The void left by the Lost Colony has been replaced on Roanoke by the towns of Manteo and Wanchese. Manteo is the site of historic Fort Ralegh, the Elizabeth II, the long running drama The Lost Colony, and the Elizabethan Gardens. Wanchese is a dispersed fishing village covering the southern end of the island.
