| Pinehurst Resort and Country Club |
Remarkably, this small town carved from the pine barrens of eastern North Carolina by a Boston business man has been associated worldwide with the game of golf for nearly a century. Originally founded as a winter resort for New Englanders, James Walker Tufts, the founder, soon recognized the potential of the game and grew his resort into the prestigious golfing destination it now is. Long able to attract the top names of the sport, Pinehurst continues that tradition by hosting the U.S. Open in 1999.
Although golf is the leading reason to visit the Sandhills area, the adjacent towns of Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen do offer a few other diversions. Primarily those would be in line with the generally quiet, genteel peace that settles on the area which was designed, first and foremost, to provide an escape.
