San Antonio
The Alamo. Riverwalk. These are the two attractions which define San Antonio; but they do not the whole city make. Founded as the Spanish Mission San Antonio de Valero in 1718, San Antonio has morphed various immigrant and other influences to become a vibrant and popular travel destination.
San Antonio has grown in spurts. First Indians, then the Spanish, followed by American immigrants, and then Germans, who poured money into the city and transformed it from a gambling, gun fighting town into a community. The military has made a big impact too. Several large bases in the area make San Antonio by some accounts the second largest military town in the country.
The accessible downtown is where tourist will spend most of their time. Riverwalk (San Antonio Attractions) is the popular dining and shopping area which winds it way through downtown. Then of course there's the Alamo, that most American symbol courage and commitment and a rallying cry for one of the country's most pivotal conflicts. It's also downtown.
As much as any particular attraction, the overall atmosphere in San Antonio is a draw. Bridging the gap between large and small cities, San Antonio offers a lot, while maintaining a sense of the personal and intimate. It's one of those places that most everyone finds something to like.
